This fall I have decided to continue exploring a variety of media and techniques without getting locked into a specific theme. Don't get me wrong, I love my themed programs, but there is something fun too about choosing art projects "just cuz you love them" :) The following projects are being done by both both my Junior High class as well as my regular Friday afternoon class, as most of the kids coming in the afternoon are of Junior High age. Adaptations have been made for some of my younger kids.
Enjoy:)
Enjoy:)
Week One
As much as I love summer I also love getting back to a regular fall routine. I was so happy to have these kids back working on art projects with me.
For our first week's project I took the opportunity to use up some of the beautiful scrap paper strips I'd been saving for so long. I KNEW I'd find a good project for them! First we glued the colorful strip onto recycled computer paper then trimmed them up nicely. Afterwords, each student selected a top layer that best suited their color choices. Once students drew on their large fall leaves , or acorns in some cases, were them given small exact o knives and asked to carve portions of their leaves, revealing the colors hidden below. They loved this.

Week Two
It's fall here in Edmonton, as it is, of course, around much of the world. It feels like it came quickly here. Time to work on some fall trees:) These trees were inspired by artist, Lorretta Grayson. Unfortunately, because it was such a cloudy day today, the colors didn't come out in the photos as beautiful as they actually are.
This is an excellent project to introduce the concepts of color tinting and shading as well as tertiary and warm an cool colors.

Week 3
I love working with paper and scissors so I just couldn't resist doing another project using those materials. This is a lesson in positive and negative space. I looks a lot easier than it really is. This project required the kids to do a lot of thinking and planning. They had to be able to visualize the pieces in an opposite position. We talked about balance and about making sure their work was centered. Some of my students chose to work with examples I provided and some chose to work on their own ideas.
Very satisfying finish!

Week Four
Wow! Already half way through the session !
I've often wanted to do a silhouette project but could never seem to get past believing it had to be black. Funny how we get ideas stuck in our heads. Well, I finally managed to get "unstuck" with these very fun and colorful "doodle paintings" :) The criteria for these projects were to use as many colours as possible and to cover at last 75% of the paper using layered patterns. Very fun ans relaxing work.

Week Five
This week I introduced the kids to alcohol ink painting. They absolutely LOVED it. Lot of "ooos" and "awwwws" and "oh my goodness looks at this' ". We had a blast mixing and moving our colors around the tiles. I am definitely going to do this one again.
This project was a great project for reinforcing color theory. Primary colors, secondary colors, blending and mixing etc...

Weeks 6 and 7
Wire sculpting. Sooooo much fun! I have seen these on the internet but I may not have tried them if a friend hadn't done them with her kids at home first. For this project kids were given a wire coat hanger and asked to create a shape that would make an interesting, non-subjective, 3 dimensional sculpture. It required them to imagine what form their wire would create once covered in nylon. Students were allowed to paint their sculpture to represent their own creative ideas.

Week 8
Tinted and Shaded Concentric Circles
This is a project I have hanging on my art room wall. The kids liked them so much they requested to do it a the last project of this session. For this project students used acrylic paint which they tinted and shaded to create a variety of concentric dot circles.
